The evolution toward modern agriculture has posed serious problems for soils, the environment, and human health. Since the 1960s, warnings have been raised about the harmful effects of the chemical products used in agriculture, such as pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, which have damaged the environment and altered wild flora and fauna. Several studies document the negative impacts on soil, water, biodiversity, local economies, and human well-being. This work examines the causes and consequences of these practices, as well as the solutions aimed at reforming agricultural management and moving toward a more sustainable future. The use of organic products —fertilizers and biostimulants— is highlighted as a viable alternative to promote sustainability, with emphasis on their chemical composition and the bioactivities they exert on plants and crops.
